FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I get a medical certification if I can purchase adult use in my state?
There are many benefits to keeping your status as a medical patient. Patient discounts are designed to allow each patient to recoup the cost of their medical certification by taking advantage of new and renewing specials at participating dispensaries. Patients also receive discounts such as veteran, financial hardship, and seniors at most dispensaries. Additionally, you save at least 20% in taxes with each purchase.
As a medical Cannabis patient, you can purchase larger amounts and greater varieties of products, along with on-site preferred parking and delivery from participating dispensaries. Perhaps the biggest benefit of being a medical patient is protection under the medical Cannabis law, with access to a medical professional year-round to discuss any issues or concerns about your healthcare and Cannabis medicine.
What do I need to become a patient?
You must be a resident of Massachusetts, 18 years of age** or older who has been diagnosed by a certifying practitioner as having a debilitating medical condition. Once our practitioner certifies you, there is a quick online registration with the Cannabis Control Commission. You will need two documents to register; a valid MA ID/Driver’s License, US Passport or US Military ID, and proof of MA residency. We can provide assistance, or complete the registration process for you as a courtesy to our patients.
**In Massachusetts it is possible for a person under the age of 18 to obtain a Medical Marijuana Certification, different rules apply. Please call us for more information on certifications for minors.
Will my medical insurance pay for any part of my certification or Cannabis medication?
At this time, no. Marijuana, even medical marijuana, is still considered illegal under federal law and is therefore not eligible to be covered by medical insurance.
How much does it cost to get a Medical Marijuana card?
$150 – New and renewing patients
$140 – Veterans with Veteran ID or DD214
$125 – Financial hardship – with proof of state assistance
$100 – Cannabis Industry workers – with documentation of employment
Always check our website or social media to be up to date on any of our promotional events that can save you even more!
Does $150 only get me one appointment with a provider per year?
You have access to your certifying provider all year long. If you ever have any questions whatsoever, or wish to have more time to speak with your provider, please call us. We are more than happy to arrange a follow up meeting upon request.
What conditions qualify me for a medical marijuana card?
“Cancer, glaucoma, positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (when such diseases are debilitating), and any other debilitating* conditions as determined by a qualifying patient’s certifying physician.”
* “Debilitating” is defined as having symptoms that limit one or more of a patient’s major life activities (IE; sleeping, eating, working, social). Benefits of Medical Marijuana outweigh the risks, and if the symptoms related to such conditions are mitigated by the medical use of marijuana.
Are medical records required for certification?
Our providers at any time may request further documentation of a patient’s conditions before issuing a certification for medical marijuana. However, medical records are not required by law.
What if I don’t know what to take for my conditions?
We are happy to arrange for an education session following your appointment. Learning to medicate with marijuana for your conditions can be very personal, and can take time to find the right fit for you. We can help guide you through the basics of marijuana types, strains, method of intake, and quantity. If you prefer, a more in depth and detailed product and dosing visit is available with our Nurse Practitioner for an additional fee.
Once I’m certified by the practitioner, am I done?
Not yet. In order to be an official medical marijuana patient in the state of Massachusetts you must also complete the registration process with the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission. You will receive specific instructions after your appointment. You can register online, or you can register by mail. Be advised it can take much longer to become officially registered when submitting your application by mail. We can provide assistance, or complete the registration process for you as a courtesy to our patients.
What’s the difference between a Medical Marijuana certification and a registration?
A certification is when a medical provider declares to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) that you, the patient, have a medical condition which qualifies you for medical marijuana use. A registration is when you register with the CCC either online or through the mail in order to receive a medical marijuana ID card, which you need to purchase medical marijuana. Both your certification and your registration must be valid and up to date in order for you to purchase medication from a dispensary.
How often do I have to renew my Medical Marijuana certification?
Yearly. The certification is valid for exactly 365 days from the date you meet with a practitioner.
My medical card has an expiration date on it. Is this my certification expiration date?
No, this is your registration date and this can be one of the most confusing aspects of being a patient. Your provider certification is completely separate from your registration. The date you see on your card refers only to your registration with the CCC. Your certification with a provider expires EXACTLY 365 days from the day you meet with them. (For example: If you meet with a provider to get certified on July 4th, 2020, your date to renew next year will be July 3rd, 2021) Your certification date will also be listed in your CCC online profile, which you can log into at any time.
Can I purchase Medical Marijuana right away?
Yes. You are issued a printable 14 day temporary ID by the Cannabis Control Commission immediately after a provider submits your certification. You can then purchase medical marijuana at any medical dispensary in Massachusetts. Upon completing the online registration at patient.massciportal.com, you are issued a printable 6 week temporary ID. A plastic photo ID card will then arrive in the mail typically within 2 to 4 weeks.
Can I grow my own Cannabis medicine?
As a medical marijuana patient in the state of Massachusetts, you are allowed to grow and possess at one time 12 vegetative plants (plants with no buds or flowers), 12 flowering plants, and unlimited clones. You may also have a Caregiver grow your medicine for you. The Cannabis Control Commission encourages patients to secure grow areas under lock and key, and to keep plants out of public view.
What is a Medical Marijuana Personal Caregiver?
As a Medical Marijuana patient you are able to register up to 2 individuals as your personal caregiver. Each caregiver may have up to 5 patients that they can assist. Each caregiver must register with the CCC and be issued an ID card that allows them to make purchases at the dispensaries, or grow medical Cannabis on the patient’s behalf.

Your Massachusetts Medical Marijuana card makes it legal for you to grow, possess, consume and purchase cannabis in Massachusetts.
